9/11 and The Media

March 19, 2008

When a dramatic event occurs, wether it is a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, it is the media’s responsibility to cover the event and make the information know to citizens all over the world.  When the terrorist attacks occurred on 9/11, it was unlike anythhing the media or society had ever seen before; there were towers collapsing and human beings committing suicide on live television. When these events unfolded in front of millions of viewers on T.V., it had a profound effect on all the individuals of our society.  As Berger states, it immediately developed a more internationalist America, a larger concern with worldwide terrorism, and many new heroes emerged. Regardleess of how severe an attack may be or how graphic it is, people’s curiosity will always win.  “Some psychiatrists even suggested at the time that it would be best if people didn’t watch so much television…but people were so curious about the event that it led to a stronger audience” (Berger 147).  There will always be good and bed occurring in the world, but there will also always be another steadfast: media.  One can rely on the media to present information (wether it is edited or biased), in one form or another to Americans and others all around the world.
